We are pleased to announce that the Albuquerque and Santa Fe Chapters will be hosting the Veterans For Peace National Convention in Albuquerque, NM, from August 5 to August 9, 2020. Our convention will be held at the Crowne Plaza located in downtown Albuquerque.
The theme of this year’s convention is “All is one, Toward a Peaceful and Nuclear-Free World. Since our founding, Veterans For Peace has had it in our goals “to end the arms race and to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons”. This year’s convention will highlight work being done to address nuclear weapons as well as nuclear colonialism and broader topics such as what decolonizing the peace movement looks like.
This weekend will mark the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the first nuclear explosion of all time at the Trinity Site, New Mexico, which occurred on July 16, 1945. Nuclear colonialism has continued since that date, with the United States time and again selecting New Mexico for not only additional nuclear tests, but also as the site for nuclear waste storage - despite the overwhelming opposition of indigenous communities in the region.
You can also download and mail this registration form and send your registration in to the national office via snail mail.
Please note you must register for your housing separately. A block of rooms has been reserved for August 5, 2020 - August 9, 2020. More details will follow soon on how to reserve your lodging.
Workshop Applications Now Open
Workshops are one of the most important activities during the Veterans For Peace annual conventions. Most of them are organized and led by Veteran For Peace members. We greatly appreciate the time and effort presenters put into creating their workshops.
Workshop blocks will be on Friday during the convention, with a total of 15 workshops available.
The theme of the convention is "All is One: Towards a Nuclear-Free and Peaceful World." The 2020 Convention Committee is asking folks to submit workshop applications focused on one or more of the following themes:
Building an internal culture of peace
Militarism and the climate crisis
Anti-militarization and current military conflicts
Subject matter related to VFP national projects or working groups
If we receive two or more proposals on the same or similar topics, we may ask you to combine your workshop with another presenter.
Proposals for workshops will not be accepted after May 15, 2020. You can find more information on our website, including a PDF version of the Workshop application.
Assist a VFP Member!
Veterans For Peace annual convention is an amazing opportunity to connect and build with other veterans and allies. It is important that everyone in our community is able to attend.
With your help we can continue to offer reduced rates and scholarships! The convention depends upon the kindness of those who support Veterans For Peace.
We appreciate whatever you can give to make the convention more accessible to our veterans.
The 2020 Convention would love to hear any ideas you have on fundraising to ensure we can bring as many veterans as possible to our convention! Please email email@example.com!
Many members of VFP and vendors choose to table at our convention. This year is no different! It is a great opportunity to meet and greet many convention attendees. The tables are located in a main traffic area! There are only a limited amount of tables so make sure you get your application in soon!
We are appealing to VFP chapters, businesses, or allied organizations to contribute to the 2020 VFP convention by placing an ad in the convention program booklet. In past years, VFP Chapters have used these ads as an opportunity to publicize special projects, chapter publications, or to promote merchandise. Some have used an ad to share a powerful message on peace issues of particular interest to them with convention attendees.
