Fire Drill Friday: Climate Change and Militarism
Inspired by urgent action needed to address climate change, Jane Fonda is upending her life and spending 4 months in Washington D.C. this fall.
Funding endless war is an existential threat to human life and one of the leading causes of climate change, which is why it’s urgent that we make the connection between U.S. militarism and climate change.

Armistice Day is right around the corner, and once again, Veterans For Peace is taking the lead to #ReclaimArmisticeDay. This year, as we celebrate the 101st Anniversary of Armistice Day we call for November 11 to be observed as “a day dedicated to the cause of world peace," as it was celebrated at the end of World War I when the world came together to recognize the need for lasting peace.
Make sure to check out our website for ideas on ways you and your chapter can take action. We have compiled an amazing amount of resources from various chapters to help make your Armistice Day a success! We have sample Armistice Day proclamations that chapters have used in their cities, a Litany of Bells, sample flyers and press releases and more!
Waging Peace in Vietnam in D.C.
Partnerships for International Strategies in Asia and the Elliott School of International Affairs present an exhibit, book launch and conference, along with cultural events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Mobilization for Peace.
November 15, at the close of the symposium we will conduct a reenactment of the March Against Death with a three block march from GW University's Elliott School of International Affairs (where the week's events are happening) to the White House. There we will pay tribute to both the Americans and the Vietnamese who were killed during the war. That march will begin at about 6 p.m.
Veterans For Peace has endorsed the most recent collaboration of a wide swath of organizations to reduce military spending.
It’s time to stop misdirecting hundreds of billions of dollars away from domestic and human needs to pad unnecessary budget lines for endless wars, failed weapons and the Pentagon’s corporate handouts. Doing so will make our country stronger and more just. Pentagon spending should be reduced by at least $200 billion immediately, which would free up $2 trillion or more over the next decade for domestic & international human needs priorities.
In 1958 the Golden Rule anti-nuke sailing ship sailed into Honolulu on its way to the Marshall Islands to try to stop atmospheric nuclear testing and the captain and crew were arrested. Folks gathered in front of the state capital iof Honolulu had their monthly protest against the nuclear siren alarm and were holding many of the same signs! See more photos
The Golden Rule was featured on the front page of the Sunday edition of Hawaii's largest newspaper, the Star Advertiser. Please see the post on the VFP Golden Rule website, with impressive photos of the front page spread.
They have been busy doing interviews and educational talks on the need to abolish nuclear weapons.
Peace Groups Hold International Conference for Korea Peace
A South Korean civilian peace delegation of 17 people visited New York City and Washington, D.C. to meet U.S. peace groups, that included Veterans For Peace, recently, and both groups jointly held an International Conference for Korea Peace at the UN Church Center in NYC on Oct. 26.
Korea Peace Campaign coordinator John Kim writes a report detailing the five major points that South Korean peace groups are advocating for at this time.
The guilty verdict on October 24 was not a complete surprise as the court did not allow the expert witnesses. The jury in Brunswick, GA never heard from former National Security Council member, nuclear war planner, and whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, international law expert Francis Boyle, or theologian Jeannine Hill Fletcher.
Nonetheless, together the Kings Bay Plowshares 7 and all of their supporters have offered a profound witness for the world. There is more to do. There is a lot you can do to spread the word of the Plowshares action and to multiply their efforts to abolish nuclear weapons.
Veterans For Peace member was Rob Mulford arrested protesting the Association of Defense Communities.
"Being viscerally affected by the recent murder of over thirty pine nut farm workers via a U.S. drone strike, I could not allow this attempt to further militarize our local community and its economy happen without protest. So I decided to perform a little street theater at the entrance of the hotel. Not blocking the entrance nor directly in front of the doors, I stood wearing a sandwich board that said (on the front) GET THE WAR RACKET OUT FAIRBANKS and (on the back) WARFIGHTER WANT OUT? CALL 877-447-4487 (the GI Rights Hotline). I also carried a Veterans For Peace flag, on which I attached a small but fairly high quality amplified speaker and an MP3 player, on which I had loaded Buffy Sainte-Marie's "The War Racket"."
VFP President sends letter to Irish Justice Minister
Veterans For Peace President Gerry Condon recently sent a letter on behalf of VFP in support of Tarak Kauff and Ken Mayers, members of Veterans for Peace who are in Ireland, unable to return home due to criminal charges pending against them for protesting the U.S. violation of Ireland's neutrality at Shannon Airport.
They have launched "Home By Christmas", a postcard campaign aimed at the Justice Minister asking them to let Ken and Tarak be allowed to leave the country. If you are interested in some postcards, please contact Ellen Davidson: firstname.lastname@example.org
