Below is a sample letter encouraging members of Congress to support the provision in President Biden’s infrastructure plan that dedicates 18 billion dollars to upgrading VA medical centers. Three billion dollars is earmarked to address unsafe and inefficient conditions, upgrade facilities to accommodate the increasing number of women veterans, and improve access for aging veterans. Fifteen billion dollars is earmarked to totally replace 10 to 15 aging medical centers with new state-of-the art facilities. (Two-thirds of VA medical centers are over 50 years old.)
Improvements in the VA Healthcare System’s physical plant have been postponed to the point where conditions are often unsafe for patients and employees. Critics of the president’s proposal argue that such funding should be delayed until the Asset and Infrastructure Commission (AIR) completes its work in 2023. This is despite the fact that the MISSION ACT, which established the AIR Commission, explicitly states in Section 208(b) that the AIR Commission’s deliberations should not interrupt the planning and implementation of VA projects.
Maintaining and strengthening the VA Healthcare System cannot be a partisan issue. All political figures, regardless of party affiliation, must honor the nation’s obligation to those who served. Please write to your Members of Congress to encourage them to support the president’s infrastructure plan. When you do, personalize your email by clicking on the box with the letter. Personalizing your letter nearly doubles its influence on Members of Congress and this only takes a moment.
