Veterans For Peace 'Be the Change' Book Club
Meetings January 10, 24, February 7 and 21: 5pm EDT | 4pm CST | 3pm MST | 2pm PST
Sessions will follow at the same hour on Sunday's bi-weekly; Jan 10, 24 and Feb 7 and 21. (We are asking everyone to commit to full participation or anticipate not missing more than one of the dates listed.)
The purpose of this group is to explore with others, via discussion of various books and other media, in a safe and open social space, the ways in which colonization, racism, gender bias and other biases show up in our lives and in our activism. Growing our awareness of how our words and actions affect and are related to the society we live in, and how our personal behaviors contribute to the culture of Veterans For Peace, allows us to be more accountable to ourselves and others, increases our individual agency. Learn more about yourself and others by coming together for meaningful discussions geared toward personal and organizational growth, in a mutually supportive atmosphere reflective of the VFP mission of “building a culture of peace."
Our second book will be Me and White Supremacy by Layla Saad. VFP Board member Ben Schrader writes, "The book Me and White Supremacy is one of the best guides to understanding how racism is a part of our everyday lives. It is very accessible and at the end of every chapter there is a series of questions that help us reflect on how we perpetuate racism and pushes us to think of ways of how we can fight it. Layla Saad’s book has helped me to not only see how racism plays a part in my personal life, but also how it is a part of the organizations and institutions that I am in. This will be a great book for members of VFP to read and take in as we move to make our work more intersectional and try to become peace makers in all aspects of our lives."
Please note: we know that these dates may not work for everyone but please sign up anyway to stay connected because we see this work as ongoing!
